The Swiss Society of Aerobiology (SSA) welcomes you to their Internet site. We hope that it will provide you with useful information and that it will enable you to make interesting contacts.

The Swiss Working Group of Aerobiology was founded in 1983 to establish a primary network for the measuring of pollen and spores and to investigate allergies triggered by pollen. In 1993 the Swiss Working Group of Aerobiology became the Swiss Society of Aerobiology (SSA). At present, there is still a predominance of the medical profession among its members.

Thanks to the initiative of SSA, MeteoSwiss, the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, has been operating a pollen measuring network with 14 stations in different regions of Switzerland since 1993. Pollen grains are analysed and counted at MeteoSwiss in Zurich and Payerne. A range of bulletins and forecasts are published based on these data.

Aerobiology draws on many other scientific disciplines: it is an important objective of SSA to encourage interdisciplinary exchange. This site offers a discussion platform. In the future, SSA wants to extend its activities to aerobiological study in the field of agronomy. There are several fungal diseases affecting crops which are caused by spores dispersed in the air. If medicine, meteorology and agronomy co-operate, they can create synergies, e.g. by using a common network or a common centre for analysis. Furthermore, SSA organizes courses and workshops for its members where they can share and expand their knowledge of the subject.

If this site appeals to you, if you work in an area related to aerobiology , in a field where aerobiology could be applied or in a field that could be applied to aerobiology, please do not hesitate to make use of our information, get in touch with us and perhaps become a member of the Swiss Society of Aerobiology.
