Biological particles in the air can make up to 10 - 50% of the total aerosol mass and in numbers, depending on the season and the geographical location. Particle size range from 0.01 µm to more than 100 µm. Viruses belong to the smallest biological particles, while pollen belong to the bigger ones (10 -150 µm). Also insects, plant fragments or small seeds are part of the airborne biological particles.
The biological particles are numerous and diversified: viruses, bacteria, fungal spores, algae, protozoa cysts, spores of mosses and ferns, pollen, plant fragments, small seeds and insects as well as any airborne particles originating from the whole particles mentioned above.
